Abstract

The purpose of this study is to survey private insurance subscribers' levels of knowledge of and satisfaction with private medical insurance service, and thereby, enhance subscribers' right and interests. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted by subscribers' levels of knowledge into four areas (private medical insurance commodities, obligation of notification, validity time and benefit system) and categorizing their levels of satisfaction into three areas (private medical insurance commodities, insurers and insurance designers). For this survey, 500 private medical insurance subscribers living in Inchon were sampled, and 465 subscribers excluding poor respondents were selected finally.
The collected data were processed using the SAS program for frequencies and percentiles of subjects' demographic variables, T-test and ANOVA of levels of knowledge and satisfaction, and Pearson's coefficient between knowledge and satisfaction.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows;
Most people subscribed to the medical insurance because of the financial burden for medical cost, followed by insurance designers' encouragement, added service, year-end tax deduction, other people's subscription, etc., in their order.
The area of knowledge of private insurance services which differed most significantly among subjects was obligation of notification, followed by validity time, medical insurance commodities and benefit system, while the level of knowledge differed significantly among age groups but not among sexes, marriage status, academic backgrounds or jobs. In addition, the level of knowledge differed significantly depending on information routes, experiences of being compensated or motives for subscription.
On the other hand, subscribers' were satisfied most with life designers' services, followed by private medical insurance commodities and insurers in their order. However, the level of satisfaction did not differ significantly depending on sexes, age groups, marriage status, academic backgrounds, jobs or information routes, but differed significantly depending on experiences of being compensated or motives for subscription.
Besides, levels of subscribers' knowledge and satisfaction were found to be correlated positively with each other.
In all, subscribers' levels of knowledge of and satisfaction with private medical insurance services were significantly correlated with motives for subscription, while the experience of being compensated affected much the knowledge and satisfaction. Moreover, the level of knowloedge was positively correlated with the level of satisfaction. Therefore, it may well be necessary to correctly understand consumers' needs for private medical insurance services and thereby, develop proper insurance commodities. Then, subscribers' knowledge of and satisfaction with private medical insurance services would be enhanced, and thereby, the private medical insurance services would complement the national medical insurance system only to improve people's welfare level.
